If you grew up in San Diego or its vicinity, you probably have memories of tasting your first margaritas south of the border in Tijuana when you were still underage (don’t worry, we won’t tell your mom!). Cheap tequila and even cheaper mixers blended together in a dirty glass, at the time, seemed awesome – and plus, they were bottomless! But now you’re a grown up and it’s time to have a grown-up margarita. Stash those memories of heart burn and hangovers, and try out one of San Diego’s best margarita’s from Rocky’s favorite cantinas!

5. Baja Betty’s
In a party mood? Down for a flamboyant, Lady Gaga-heavy vibe? Head uptown into Hillcrest and one of its institutions – Baja Betty’s on University. Their margaritas range from the basic to the upscale, you can count on one thing from Betty’s marge – they’re gonna be STRONG!

4. La Puerta

With over 100 tequilas – most from Jalisco, Mexico (the home of tequila!), any blue agave lovers should make their way to 4th avenue at sometime during their stay in SD.  Plus, they all use fresh lime juice. Delicious!

3. Ponce’s

If you’re east of the 15 freeway, be sure to pop into Ponce’s in Kensington. Their margaritas come in small and large (uh, go large. Always), and are shaken by expert bartenders. Ask about their margarita of the day – it’ll be on special!

2. Cantina Mayahuel

Also on Adams Avenue is the small and unassuming Cantina Mayahuel. Like La Puerta, they’ve got more tequilas than you can imagine, in a small, intimate and rustic bar setting. Although they’ll make you a margarita with any of their tequilas, our favorite is their house marg – it’s the perfect amount of sweet and sour, with a PUNCH!

1. Rockin’ Baja

What, you didn’t think we’d forget RBCC, did you? Sure, there are tons of margaritas in San Diego, but when it comes to variety and creativity, Rockin’ Baja comes out on top. Whether you’re looking for a classic ‘rita like they serve in Puerto Nuevo or something a little different (we love the spicy mango and the skinny marg for pre-Spring Break), Baja’s bartenders have the perfect Mexican beverage to complete your meal – or  to serve by itself. Hey – the perfect margarita IS a meal right?

Don’t take it from us – head over to one of Rockin’ Baja’s several locations today and test a few margaritas for yourself!
